Self Reliance

I must be myself.

I will not hide my tastes or aversions. I will so trust that which is deep and holy, that I will do strongly before the the sun and the moon only whatever rejoices me, and the heart apoints.

If you are noble, I will love you: if you are not, I will not hurt you and myself by hypocritical attentions. If you are true , but not in the same truth as me, cleave to your companions: I will seek my own. I do this not selfishly, but humbly and truly.

It is alike your interests and mine and all mens, however long we have dealt in lies, to live in truth.

Emerson.

I like that...but then I think self-reliance is really the most important thing to consider...

..without the helping of self what do we have?

Hi Indie , and if we dont help ourselves, we are always looking, blaming, and projecting our failings onto others.
Mind you,I have lived what emerson says, and its not a popular path.

One can't offer up love and light if one doesn't avail oneself to darknesses, eh?

Oh, I embrace those who journey with dignity and grace.
But what about those who struggle in the darkness?

LOL Here I am arguing with Emerson!
It is a beautifully written piece.
And it is only my fist pot of coffee...LOL

I think if one lives like this Mel, one is in the position to be real help to the people struggling in darkeness, if one is clear in them selves, then they can react with clarity and compassion to others.
And who says you cant argue with Emerson?LOL

Ps Mel
Emerson himself has said that he preferred being with people who were struggling in darkeness, as the were more "true" to themselves than others...which has been my experiance also.

I like this passage. Emerson is one of those who I would love to have known. I have not spent as much time studying his work as I would like.

Hi Exception, how lovely to see you here,Emerson is one of my favourite writters, and I wouldve liked to have known him, if I wasn,t too intimidated, that is.
